Smoking for two?

Countless number of studies in the past has shown the harmful effects of smoking. Especially how smoking during pregnancy increases the chances of miscarriage, still birth and birth defects. Recent study has shown the harmful effects of smoking during pregnancy may be reflected in the facial movements of mothers’ unborn babies.

Pilot study done by the researchers at Durham and Lancaster showed using 4D ultrasound scans that the foetuses of smoking mothers showed an increased rate of mouth movements than the normal declining rate of movements expected in a foetus during pregnancy.

They also hypothesized that the reason for this could be due to the differences in development of central nervous system between the foetuses of mothers who did not smoke during pregnancy versus the mothers who smoked during pregnancy. Though not highly significant, this study has also found evidence of reduction in the facial touching by foetuses whose mothers smoked during pregnancy, compared to the foetuses of non-smokers.

There is no “safe” level of smoking during pregnancy and previous studies have shown abnormalities in speech processing in infants exposed to smoking during pregnancy. Though the currently study is a pilot experiment and a larger study needs to done to confirm these negative effects of smoking during pregnancy, this throws light on understanding the relationship between maternal smoking, stress, depression and foetal development.

  1. A pregnant woman should never smoke. It’s just like feeding your child with Poison while he is inside the fetus.
